Progressive grunge? That’s what the “surprise” third album from U.S.-based Last Band (we dig the name) sounds like. According to the group’s Bandcamp page, the 13 songs on The Sacrament in Accidents “largely draw from the torment of personal conflict, societal ills and internal struggle to cope and accept the traumas we’re made to face in life.”
An easy listen, this is not.
Blurring Pearl Jam-y and Alice in Chains-like vocals with instrumental flashes of King’s X and Rush, this is thudding, distorted, emotive and -- dare we say -- cathartic stuff that won’t be for everyone. But that’s not Last Band’s mission. Clearly, these guys are making the music they need to make. Take it or leave it.
Founders Patrick Paul and Matt LeGrow share vocal and guitar duties, with Ryan Biller drumming on four tracks (Paul takes over behind the kit for the others). Essentially, Last Band is a duo that sounds at least like a quartet. And that alone is impressive.
Divided into two song cycles, the first half of the CD features Last Band’s darker, heavier edge, while the second half emphasizes the band’s more reflective, melodic side. That way, listeners can better grasp Last Band’s breadth.
