Chicago's Sons of Ra released this stacked EP Tropic of Cancer earlier this year, an all-instrumental platter of prog-rock and fusion sounds that garnered the attention of Ken Golden, who signed them to a deal with his label Free Electric Sound for their upcoming release. The line-up for this one consists of :
Erik Oldman: Guitars, Synths, Keys
Keith Wakefield: Tenor Saxophone, Bass Guitar
Michael Rataj: Drums
Special Guests:
Jessica Billey: Violin
Quentin Dover: Pipa
Isaiah Sanderman: Flute
At just over 20 minutes, Tropic of Cancer gives you a glimpse of what Sons of Ra are all about and leaves you wanting more. The soaring sax on III adds a nice jazz touch, while blazing guitar and acrobatic drumming propel the wild prog/fusion of I. Some funky flavors permeate the second track (yep, these are all titled Tropic of Cancer I-VI), and IV is lovely, soaring prog with some gorgeous violin. It will be interesting to see what these guys bring to the table on their next release now that they've whetted our appetite for more with this EP.
