La Chinga: Primal Forces
The Vancouver power trio known as La Chinga is back with their latest platter of raunchy rock & roll for Ripple Music, titled Primal Forces. Vintage sounds and a good-time vibe is the name of the game here, the band paying homage to many of the bluesy hard rock giants of the '70s and '80s, such as AC/DC, Cinderella, Aerosmith, Tesla, Skid Row, Guns 'n' Roses, MC5, Riot, Led Zeppelin, Humble Pie, Cactus, and Montrose. Most of these ten new tracks offer plenty of 'stand up and pump your fist in the air' moments, songs like "Ride the Dragon", "Bolt of Lightning", "Backs to the Wall", "The Call", and "Witch's Heart" dial up the guitar firepower, and thanks to the stellar production, gives the entire album a real 'wow' factor that doesn't let up from the opening cruncher "Light It Up". While I enjoyed their previous album Beyond the Sky, this one is on another level. "Stars Fall From the Sky" could either be a long-lost track from that first Montrose album, or an undiscovered gem from some unknown band from hair metal's past. As far as "Motorboogie" goes...think Soundgarden blended with a little psychedelic stoner rock. Fun stuff.
That is ultimately what this album is all about...having fun with music. No nonsense, classic-styled hard rock, steeped in potent vocals, crunchy guitar work, and memorable songs. I was toying with a 3.5 rating on this one, but it gets better the more I hear it, and a VERY solid 4 is much more in line with how I'm feeling at this point. Recommended.

La Chinga: Primal Forces Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2025-04-23 04:45:00 My Score:
For those of you who think hard rock is decline I urge you to listen to Vancouver based La Chinga. These guys make no bones about it, they revel in ‘70s style hard rock that sounds both fresh and exciting. In the band are Carl Spackler (vocals and bass), Ben Yardley (vocals, guitar, theremin, Moog, Mellotron), and Jason Solyom (drums and vocals).
Their 2023 album titled Primal Forces is both a step back into the past and a bold step forward, the band clearly paving the way for rock music in our current times. There is a commonality between both and that is this band rocks with an honest passion that is so very welcome to these ears.
The first track “Light It Up” is a blistering start, the guitar riffs and solos scorching and the gritty lead vocals, supplemented with melodic backing (all band members sing), come together creating a powerful statement. You also get the feeling these guys love what they are doing, putting the fun back into heavy rock. I hear a mix of ACDC and Judas Priest in the fast paced “Ride The Dragon”, a no holds barred slice of searing hard rock. On the bluesy retro heavy rock of “Bolt Of Lightning” I hear early Led Zeppelin, especially their first album, and with “Back To The Wall” the band’s fiery brand of catchy hard rock is readily apparent, this time the band’s love of Iron Maiden shines through the massive grooves and riffs. The mid-tempo “Witches Heart” is another rocker that takes its que from classic ‘70s hard rock with its soaring vocals, catchy chorus, and slowly smouldering lead guitar. With “The Call” the guitar riffs are particularly massive and the melodies just as effective. Another great track!
I commend La Chinga for being true to their hearts, creating a slice of heavenly hard rock in the process. I cannot recommend Primal Forces enough!
A Ripple Music release.
