Appalooza: The Shining Son

Hailing from France, heavy rockers Appalooza have just released their second album for Ripple Music, titled The Shining Son. Containing eight new song, The Shining Son is a moody, brooding, and heavy album that will instantly appeal to fans of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden with its dark sounds and bruising riffs. The band is comprised of:

Wild Horse: Vocal / Guitar
Lone Horse: Drum
Black Horse: Bass
The Horse: Percussions / Backing Vocals

Right off the bat on opening tracks "Pelican", "Unbreakable", and "Framed", you are instantly hit with just how close Wild Horse's vocals sound like vintage Layne Staley of Alice in Chains. "Groundhog Days" has a deliciously meaty riff to go along with those haunting vocals, while "Wasted Land" and "Sunburn" provide no shortage of headbanging moments, and drums of Lone Horse propelling those crushing riffs even further. "Killing Maria" is the moodiest track of the bunch, and closes out the album in hypnotic fashion. Honestly, if you told me this was a long-lost Alice in Chains album from 1995 or so, I'd be inclined to believe you. So, if the dark, heavy, and often depressing sounds of the Seattle scene were your thing, this is an easy, easy recommendation.

Appalooza: The Shining Son
Posted by Jon Neudorf, SoT Staff Writer on 2025-11-14 22:57:57
My Score:

Hailing from Brittany, France, Appalooza are a stoner/doom rock band who released their third album titled The Shining Son in 2023. Their 2021 release The Holy Of Holies was excellent, and with The Shining Son, the band’s attention to writing great songs continues with another stellar release.

The band expertly mixes heavy rock, metal, stoner and grunge, an amalgamation of styles so well performed and captivating I had a hard time taking this one out of the CD player.

The disc begins with “Pelican” where a droning guitar is followed by fuzzed out riffs before the soundscape explodes with intense rhythmic ferocity. The distant backing vocals adds a layer of mysteriousness and when the lead vocals begin it is pure bliss. The vocalist dubbed “Wild Horse” bears an uncanny resemblance to the late great Layne Staley and if you like that band then you really have to give this a listen. The chorus had me hooked almost immediately. With the rhythmic and heavy “Unbreakable” the band offer us an Indian vibe in the beginning guitar riffs and the chorus reveals another great hook and the intensity is ramped up with bone crunching screams and pounding riffs. A tricky guitar arrangement and an intense heavy rock sound highlight the powerful “Framed” and on the super catchy “Groundhog Days” the band go for a pure classic heavy rock sound where I can hear a little led Zeppelin percolating beneath the fuzz. On “Wasted Land” a huge scream segues into a massively heavy riff, and when the band eases off the gas and adds some near folky elements I hear a smattering of the great Canadian band The Tea Party. With “Wounded” the band intertwine acoustic and electric guitars in a near perfect arrangement and on “Sunburn” a cool guitar riff and more acoustic elements again harken back to shaman mysticism.

There is no doubting the band’s unlimited potential in the realm of heavy rock. There are no weak links the way I hear it. Hopefully I will be reviewing their new release in the coming weeks!

A Ripple Music release.
