Mortality: Mortality

Finland’s Mortality has released their self-titled debut of instrumental jazz that ranges from subtle atmospheric moments of piano (Aki Rissanen), at times touching on fusion, and the addition of trumpet (Verneri Pohjola) and saxophone (Pauli Lyytinen) allow for a wide palate of sound. The use of a double bass (Jori Huhtala) adds a textural element that lies underneath. The music was written by guitarist/composer Tapio Ylinen, and performed by a range of contemporary Finnish jazz and fusion musicians. The mellower moments shine with piano often laying the foundation, as the horns breathe life into the melody, often stark but at the same time powerful.

Mortality is a concept album that deals with the limits of human existence, and was written after the tragic death of Ylinen’s wife in 2015. This music just washed over me, I got lost in the atmospheres and soundscapes that are found within. That is what music is supposed to do, take your mind off everyday life and allow you to get lost inside it. The horns are so haunting on these tracks, and the piano playing is beautiful, everything compliments and nothing overwhelms. The melodies become clearer upon repeated listens, and considering the music was written from a tragedy, it is often very uplifting. The closing track, although brief shows the bands can let it rip when called upon to do so, I would love to hear this group of musicians record some heavier fusion pieces. Hauntingly beautiful are the best words I can come up with to describe what I listened to today, and I will be coming back to this disc often.

Mortality: Mortality

My Score:

Mortality is a project formed by Finnish musician Tapio Ylinen and in 2019 released their self-titled debut. Tapio is a member of the Pink Floyd tribute band Pulse and the progressive rock band 5th Season (released their debut in 2023). For this project Tapio decided to go the jazzy route, in order to create a more nuanced, contemplative, and reflective piece of music. The album is thematically based on how humans deal with mortality, personal loss, and being overwhelmed by grief. This is a very personal album for Tapio as is wife Vuokko sadly passed away in 2015 (RIP). For obvious reasons this is a heavy load but these musicians do the concept justice. All compositions were written by Tapio and he adds guitar on the first track. He is joined by Verneri Pohjola (trumpet), Pauli Lyytinen (soprano and tenor saxophones), Aki Rissanen (Grand piano and Rhodes electric piano), Jori Huhtala (double bass), Jere Haakana (guitar), and Mika Kallio (drums). Guest artist Teemu Viinikainen adds guitar on track 4.

The disc begins with the three part “In Memoriam”, a tribute to all those who have passed and it is a lovely piece. “Part I” offers some cleanly picked somber guitar with smart use of sustain perfectly capturing the reflective atmosphere. “Part 2” begins with melodic piano and heavy bass in the background. The horns give off an ethereal vibe and later on the band really cooks with an almost chaotic approach as the drums and urgent beat create plenty of drama. Folk, classical, jazz, and progressive music all play an integral part. Rhodes piano and trumpet stand out in the slightly melancholic “Part 3”, featuring dramatic swells and smoothly laid out trumpet. The meditative “Death’s Little Sister” features a great melody, wonderful trumpet courtesy of Verneri Pohjola, and fine acoustic bass work from Jori Huhtala.

The album ends with the three part “Towards Dawn” where the band’s progressive side intertwines with the album’s jazzier themes, culminating with standout Rhodes and percussion in the fusion flavoured “Towards Dawn Part 3”. The musicianship is tasteful and classy, and that goes for the entire album.

Mortality is a lovely tribute to the fallen, the band creating a sparkling slice of introspective music that has successfully blurred the lines between prog and jazz. Highly recommended!

An Eclipse Music release.
