Distortion Ride: Burning Waves of Silence
The music: “Going Down” comes charging out of the speakers with a great riff, a searing chunk of 70’s bluesy hard rock. The band is tight, but plays with a loose feel. “Bringer of Night” pulls back the reigns a bit, with guitarist Matt P stepping on that wah (which he does often) to boil up a slow stoner groove. The last two minutes get frantic; you hear their metal influences clearly. The title track shows off the bands psychedelic leanings, the second half of the song gets heavy, with driving rhythms and some speedy guitar licks. A bluesy opening leads to a sudden curveball with the reggae inflections in “Where The River Ends” offering a welcome albeit brief change of pace. The band goes back and forth between bluesy jams and heavy riffing. “Stardust” tries hard but falls flat with its overused chord progression and overly repetitive sequences.
The vocals: well, this is where I think most people will decide if they stay along for the ride. The best I can come up with is imagine the lead vocalist of Rusted Root (Remember them?) with a touch of Jeff Buckley (on the title track intro especially) fronting a hard rock band. Matt P has the pipes and a powerful delivery, and when he’s belting it out I like his voice, but he tends to add inflections and warbles (best word I can think of to describe it) and things go astray. “Cold” is the song that stands out to me, where the vocals overwhelm the song and not for the better.
The short “Going Down” quickly got my attention, and I think it is what they are best at, unfortunately as the CD went on I got bored.
