Born Again: True Heavy Nation
The Pride & Joy label have in recent times been an interesting addition to the hard rock and heavy metal family, releasing everything from melodic rock and AOR right through to the rip roaring, hard rock of Born Again - a French outfit with an obvious predilection for Motorhead, Thin Lizzy and Saxon. However, if you’re looking for a slightly more contemporary comparison, I’d suggest that Scottish rockers Attica Rage would maybe give the closest impression of what this outfit are all about.
The opening combo of “No Guts No Glory” and “Ghost Rider” pretty much pick up the hammer and smash the nail on the head with it, a straight up riff n’ roll romp striking right at the heart of what this act are all about. Something a little more Sabbathy emanates from “King Of Pain”, but again it’s hard to shake off the feel that this French outfit are kneeling down to pay homage to all things Lemmy and Co along the way.
Singer, Thierry, is much more of a rasping howler than he is a sweet choral voice but he does so with conviction and a style that masks any potentially accented delivery. Limited might be an apt description for his outlook and yet with the riffs thick and beats pummelling incessantly, it has to be said that while his approach may not be to everyone’s taste, he’s effective in his chosen field.
The power in the band however comes from the guitar and bass combination of Chris and Christopher, respectively; the pair locking in tight and able to add a little finesse to the decidedly up and at ‘em approach that runs throughout this album. But whether via the pounding smash of “Never Give Up”, the more direct “You Can’t Stop Rock n Roll” or the trudging title track, there’s no getting away from the reasonably simplistic direction taken. The latter does add in a little Thin Lizzy like guitar work in its solo and there are little deviations elsewhere, but in general, this is heads down and charge from start to finish. And as such, while True Heavy Nation is enjoyable enough, by the time you’ve worked your way through it, not much really sticks deep in the mind, or indeed draws you back for more.
