In the mood for some dramatic, ominous and moody psychedelic stoner rock? Well, look no further than the latest release from veteran Swiss act Monkey3, titled Astra Symmetry. Actually, this latest Napalm Records release is perfectly titled, as the album features a dozen tracks that will take you on a journey through the deepest reaches of the cosmos with no chance to look back. Complete with hints of Hawkwind, Monster Magnet, and Pink Floyd, Monkey3 offer up plenty of trippy keyboard soundscapes, muscular guitar riffs, and long passages of brooding atmosphere for all who can't get enough groovy psych in their lives. Floating keyboards, tribal percussion, and wah-wah guitars permeate the mesmerizing "Endless Ocean", while the haunting "Crossroad" bridges together heavy riffs with creepy keyboard orchestrations for a chilling sound, topped off by a scorching David Gilmour inspired guitar solo. While many of the songs are instrumental, vocals do play a part on a few songs, like the Opeth inspired prog-rock of "Dead Planet's Eyes" and the doom laden space rock of "Abyss".
Call is stoner rock, psychedelic, or space rock, the bottom line is Astra Symmetry is a wild musical ride that you won't soon forget. Check it out.
