Overcharger: All That We Had
This album came out back in September 2015, but I wanted to say a few things about it. I also loved the cover art on this one, an image of an evil-looking clown standing menacingly. I recently reread Stephen King's It and enjoyed making the connection between the novel and the cover art.
The cover art really captures the essential mood of this band: dark, mysterious, and somewhat playful. Even though this is a debut album from a relatively new band, the music rings familiar. The band is from France, but the music is pure Southern sludge, a blend of Down, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and others. I hear, especially in the guitars, quite a bit of Black Label Society. At times, the music also channels Pantera. Listing all these influences risks giving the wrong impression, as if the band were little more than the sum of the bands its members love. To me, there's great pleasure in seeing how bands develop a sound within a larger context. Some readers, however, will want to know what's new and different. Although this band isn't reinventing Southern sludge, it plays it with sincerity, power, and panache. I had a lot of fun listening to this one and I think others will, too. Check out "Deep South," the best track.
