Soundisciples: Audio Manifesto

Bristol brilliants Soundisciples recorded this, their sophomore album, through a screen of personal chaos that sprays f**ked-up fractals -- images of hope and death, pain, decay and rebirth -- onto the disc like a Mandelbrot sequence remixed by Hieronymous Bosch. Assuming an unlikely cadre of influences and assigning them different duties -- Portishead's trip-hop bleeps and burbles, Slayer's cutthroat rhythm guitars, Massive Attack's dark, liquid movement, Killing Joke's bone-chilling gothic cabaret, and so forth, und so weiter, Soundisciples fearlessly cross-breed genres and attitudes for a sound that has earned them gigs with both Paradise Lost and Pitchshifter. The litany of weird and tragic events that accompanied the making of Audio Manifesto would cripple a lot of people, but, as is sometimes the case, crisis can elicit a miraculous overcoming, the kind manifested on this platter. For Beastie Boys meet Sex Pistols-style street rap, check out "Reject," while "Daze of Graze," with its soulful lyrics, acid house ripples and female vox overlay slays with its beauty.
