General Surgery: Like an Ever Flying Limb EP
This release opens with these words, taken, I think, from a movie: "This is a good place to start--where we left off." As a statement of purpose, it really isn't much, but these guys aren't really celebrated for their distinguished musical aesthetic. Instead, General Surgery is mostly known for expanding on the gore and medical-themed horrors developed by Carcass all the way back in 1991. As far as goregrind goes, General Surgery is pretty consistent and is certainly more than mere imitators. Given their somewhat spotty history--a long breakup, a rotating door of new members, and big gaps between releases--the news of musical and thematic consistency is probably a good thing.
Like an Ever Flying Limbis an EP that clocks in at eleven minutes. It's pretty good, but the songs are all variations on the same formula. The songs open with spoken lines taken from films and then rapidly turn to a fast and driving musical expansion on that theme. I didn't think very much of it, perhaps because I'm not the biggest fan of this particular variation on punk, despite my own interest in horror. The longest song on this release, "Dark Cyanotic Hypostasis," was surprisingly the most interesting, mostly because of its cool opening riff, its slightly catchy chorus, and its traditional-sounding guitar solo.
