Unbreakable Hatred is a young band out of Quebec City who play a brand of technical death metal & grindcore that is as brutal as it is catchy. With cover art that reminds of many of the great releases from the Unique Leader label (and done by none other than Jon Zig, who has done art for Black Dahlia Murder, Deed of Flesh, Suffocation, and more), the Galy Records debut Total Chaos is an all around solid affair that shows plenty of promise for this extreme trio.
What gets you initially about this album is the intense guitar work, which is bludgeoningly heavy at times, but also quite technical with some wild leads & fills thrown in all over the place. Then you start to notice just how catchy these songs are. "Condemned to Serve", "Total Chaos", and "Unbreakable Hatred" are just very memorable songs, even by death metal standards. The unrelenting grind & technicality of "Religious Intervention" is as impressive as it is jarring, and "Anger and Fury" is just a glorious old school styled masher that will have all fans of the Florida scene headbanging with delight.
What doesn't quite work are the vocals of bassist of Simon Lapointe, whose lethal bark has less of a unique factor that you would like to go along with this style of music. At times he's going for more of a hardcore/grindcore style than a true death metal growl, which can be a distraction. His vocals aren't terrible by any means, but some serious low, gravelly growls might have been a better fit here. Otherwise, Total Chaos is a very enjoyable from Unbreakable Hatred, filled with sizzling guitar work, relentless drumming, and catchy, technical extreme metal. I for one will be keeping a close eye on this band in the very near future.
