It's jam band weekend here in Albany NY as Phish takes over the MVP arena for three straight nights. What a perfect time to pregame for a music-filled weekend with these Colorado based bands. A bunch of us here at Sea of Tranquility were blown away with Squeaky Feet's latest release Cause For Alarm, so there was no way I would miss this show.
Squeaky Feet started right around 8pm, and proceeded to dazzle us with virtuosity, while at the same time finding great grooves, and jamming along to them. Self-described simply as Prog-Rock with a pocket, I honestly can’t think of a more succinct way to put it. Superb musicians that dazzle with speedy runs, improvisation, and incredibly tight rhythm section. As a guitar player, I’ll admit to being transfixed on Colin Cook and Greg King who are amazing players. The only issue I had was keyboardist Brian Keller was low in the mix; I would have liked to hear him more. So glad I finally got to see this band, and they did not disappoint.
Magic Beans took the stage quickly after, and I am not familiar with their music. I was immediately impressed with how locked in bassist Chris Duffy and drummer Cody Wales were, this was the key to their sound. Keyboardist Casey Russell was much more in the mix and his presence is a must for this band’s sound. They are much closer to what I hear as a traditional jam band, and the crowd was dancing to the music. Unfortunately, being the oldster that I am, and it was a work night, I didn't stay for their entire set, but heard enough that I plan to check out their music.
Lark Hall is a wonderful venue; it is essentially a coffee house vibe at the front, and a really nice venue in the back that almost reminds me of a school gymnasium. If you have an opportunity to visit this establishment, I highly recommend it.
