Is there anything better than having your expectations exceeded? The answer is no, in case you are not certain. Sammy Hagar’s mission (according to Sammy) was to go out and pay tribute to Eddie Van Halen, and he supposedly tried to get Alex Van Halen to join up, but to no avail. Thankfully, Sammy was undeterred and moved forward with his idea.
It was a beautiful night, and I have to admit that I was a bit late due to a prior commitment (SOT was calling). As I walked in, the strains of “Turn Me Loose” were ringing through the air, and Loverboy closed their set with “Working For The Weekend”. The band sounded good, and the crowd was into it, and what a crowd, the place was packed.
The crowd was fired up as Sammy and the band came out, and we were treated to “Good Enough’, “Poundcake” with power drill in hand, and “Runaround”. I have to say the band and Sammy sounded great. This guy is 76 years old, and he had the energy of performers half his age, I guess I need to start drinking more Tequila!! What really came across was how into it the band seemed to be, interacting with each other and the audience throughout, it was infectious, these guys were having a blast, and the crowd fed off their energy. Next up was a Sammy solo tune “There’s Only One Way To Rock”, and then back to more Van Halen. Kudos to guitarist Joe Satriani who did an amazing job, he nailed Eddie’s parts and made everything sound just right. In addition, we got to hear “Satch Boogie” which was very cool. Sammy’s buddy Michael Anthony was also solid and his background vocals are integral to those tunes. In addition he sang lead on “Aint Talkin’ Bout Love” and he stepped up on a few other songs too. Drummer Jason Bonham was solid, heavy, and it was cool to see his dads face on those bass drums.
Towards the end of the show, Pat Monahan (Train) and Kevin Cronin (REO Speedwagon) came out and sang with Sammy during “When It’s Love”; both bands were playing SPAC the following night. This show was a blast, the whole vibe was really something to experience, I can’t imagine anyone walking away disappointed. If you have the opportunity, don’t miss this show!!
