Romeo's Daughter in ultra rare acoustic gig less than fifteen minutes from my home? Capital idea. This was my first (and certainly not last) visit to the beautiful intimate venue nestled in Pendle in the north west of England. When I say intimate I really mean it and the sold out downstairs area had no more than eighty punters who were treated to a superb run through the band's excellent back catalogue.
The evening was actually split into two halves, acoustic and full on electric mode with both sets featuring both 'hits' and deep cuts. The band, Leigh Matty on vocals, guitarist Craig Joiner, drummer Andy Welsford and bassist Steve Drennan were in relaxed, mirthful mode all evening. Steve Drennan has a new bass called Vanessa because it's a Warwick. Geddit?
Both sets see a band that's really tight and having a great time which really transfers to the audience.
The acoustic set ended with a tremendous version of' 'the song we'll always be associated with', I Cry Myself to Sleep at Night before a short break and a fabulously loud and raucous electric set beginning with Heaven in the Back Seat and Attracted to the Animal and ending with the obligatory Wild Child which left both the band and crowd hot and sweaty.
The band's finely crafted songs fitted wonderfully into acoustic mode and perhaps they'll have the confidence to do an enitrely stripped back set one day. You'd be a fool to miss it if it happens.
