Heavy Metal

The day was upon me, one I had looked forward to for weeks. In my busy single parenting life, one I’m sure a lot of you know, it’s hectic & crazy & hurried, I don’t get to hang out with my girlfriends quite like I used to. Amidst the anxiousness of awaiting a night out with them, I was waiting to see a good metal show, especially 5FDP, my gym buddies as I call them. I put them on and I can do more reps, go harder and go longer.

Some of you may know I’m on the Monday night show on Sea of Tranquility’s Hudson Valley Squares, although because of my busy schedule I have slacked off on a bunch of episodes, hoping to change that soon.

In any event every time I bring up 5FDP on there or around town, most guys say something negative or tell me they aren’t good or they are posers. Umm, yeah, here I stood in the pit against the barricade ( at my age ,lol) among a sea of mostly men. Now I tell you this, I have been to and worked more concerts in the last 32 years & the energy these guys bring is incredible. The sound was great, Ivan’s vocals were on point, Zoltan and the guys were great. They took you to a place where for that time, nothing else mattered. Never a dull moment, even when people were fighting in the crowd, Ivan took a minute to say guys can we just have some peace for a bit. Peace at a metal show, just so we all could enjoy our therapy. You don’t only pay for the music when you see a show, you pay for the peace it brings you, the joy, the energy, that feeling when the music fills your soul. There’s nothing like it.

The amount of outfit changes by Ivan made me feel like I was watching Maria Brink, but then I realized, he’s throwing his stuff in the crowd, from his hoodie to his hat and bracelets to the sweaty towel. None of which came my way but at 5 foot 1, he probably didn’t even see me there as I stood on my tip toes all night like a metal ballerina at her barre, only I was doing it to actually have my chest above the barricade. He gave those people a memory, so not only does this band have music that takes you to another level or gets you through pain but they are giving memories.

Yes I didn’t forget Megadeth played and what more do I need to say other than Dave looked & sounded great as usual, as they played hit after hit as the crowd went wild and brought us back to our youth, for that I am grateful. The Hu the opener, a Mongolian band with traditional Mongolian instrumentation and everything was incredible. Look for this band to do much more, the crowd was so inspired by them and they set the tone perfectly for what was to follow. I can’t wait to dive deeper in their catalog. I didn’t get to see Fire from the Gods but I heard they were great too, I’ll have to dig into them on my own. So for all you haters and naysayers that tell me nobody likes 5FDP, please I implore you to tell me why the show was packed, everyone was singing and hyped and their merch lines were insane. I’ll tell you why, Ivan speaks about recovery which a lot of people resonate with and he shares his vulnerable side to help others, they share stories we can relate to about pain and pleasure. Lastly, the music just takes you to a place that sometimes well you just don’t want to come back from and to stay in that moment.. well, it’s a beautiful thing!

Peace, love & music y’all. Be well!
