ConcertsDelain @ O2 Institute, Birmingham, UK 11/08/2016

Heavy Metal A decade since they first burst onto the Symphonic metal scene with Lucidity, Dutch rockers Delain are continuing to make their mark. Latest release Moonbathers has made a strong showing on the album charts across Europe and is bring accompanied by another lengthy tour that saw them stop off at Birmingham's O2 Institute to perform another highly energetic set in front of an expectant audience.

Some six albums in and with such a strong back catalogue, Delain are now faced with the problem of what songs they can possibly leave out from the set list. As is to be expected Moonbathers is well represented and they kick off with the orchestral arrangement and heavy riffing of 'Hands of Gold', Charlotte Wessels voice ringing out loud and clear in a venue that is not regarded one of the best for sound levels and clarity. The howling atmospherics of 'Suckerpunch' and melodic majesty of 'The Glory and the Scum' makes for an impressive opening three pack before the band head back in time with favourites such as 'Get the Devil Out of Me', 'Army of Dolls' and a delightful 'April Rain'. And with the six-pieces on stage demeanor and their more poppy elements shining through the atmosphere throughout is very upbeat even during the tender moments that come with 'The Hurricane' and 'Sleepwalkers Dream'.

A joyous 'The Gathering' is accompanied by the now obligatory bursts of silver streamers littering the room and the thunderous metal storm continued into the encore with the always dramatic 'Mother Machine' and bittersweet 'We are the Others' bringing the show to a close. Delain have a well-established fan base here in the UK and performances such as this will only serve to enhance their reputation as a top-drawer live act.
