ConcertsPower Windows “Reunion Show” @ Double D’s Club: 1/28/05

Progressive Rock The famed East Coast Rush tribute band Power Windows reunited for a special show on January 28th in Morristown, NJ, and Sea of Tranquility's Ken Pierce was on hand.

Read on for Ken's full review of the show!

A little over a year ago, the Rush Tribute band Power Windows ceased to exist as a performing entity and disbanded. When this happened the fans of this Prog-Metal Homage felt the sting quite hard for after all we had been supporting them a good 11 years or longer if memory serves me correctly. For me, this was particularly hard as not only did I become a fervent supporter of the group, but I also got involved in bringing the band to my neck of the woods in Brooklyn, NY, as well as announce them when the time came to rock. Fond memories, in more cases than not. When news of their Reunion show came to pass I knew that I must attend. The venue would be Double D's out in Morristown New Jersey. Now before I go any further you might be asking why report on a Tribute band in the first place? Well, for the readers of a Progressive Rock/Metal site the answer is quite clear, as in addition to having players from Ten Ton Tide, we have Joe Bergamini and Zak Rizvi from 4Front. Joe B. has also been very busy as the new drummer for a reunited Happy The Man, the very influential Progressive band who has been busy playing shows and recording once again.

Despite the bitter Winter chill, the night was a great one. Inside the comfortable venue was a mass gathering of Family, Friends and people who had been fans of the band for many years. There was also some new folks who just want to hear Rush played to literal perfection. The members of Power Windows are as follows: Joe Scarangella (bass/vocals), Zak Rizvi (Guitars), Joe Bergamini (Drums & Percussion) and Dan Gibson (Keyboards). Seasoned musicians on their own who when together on stage bring you the best Rush you will probably ever hear. The group performed two long sets beginning with "Subdivisions" and continued along the evening playing most of the expected favorites. Without recapping the entire set, here are some numbers of note: Tom Sawyer, La Villa Strangiato, Red Barchetta, Heresy and Bravado (done in the middle of the Roll The Bones medley), Big Money, The Trees and Xanadu. Joe B. also performed his very killer drum solo; this was always a highlight to me as he is so damned good at this stuff. Joe is currently using Tama drums and the Neil Peart Paragon line of SABIAN cymbals (actually the same as I recall the last time). Joe Scarangella was also to be applauded as he pulled off all eras of Geddy's voice with little difficulty.

If I can add gripes or disappointment on anything, I would have liked to hear more of the numbers the band had included in the past shows. Favorites of mine such as "Marathon" or "Enemy Within". Yet, a three hour set is more than enough for one band to play at a sitting. With Rush holding 30 years of musical history, it is just as hard for the band themselves to get in everything much less a tribute to them. I would have liked to see a guitar or keyboard solo for a change. The overall response was resounding and not many people left early which always will happen in the clubs. The room was still nicely crowded at the time of the encore and it looked as though the band was enjoying it as well. Let's hope that they decide to fit more gigs in a little sooner than a year apart. Even three or four times a year is better than not at all. In any case, I am glad that I attended.
