Heavy Metal

This warm up show gave Devin the opportunity to shake off any cobwebs that may have accumulated before his Retinal Circus extravaganza in a few days time. The small intimate venue provided the perfect setting to ensure gremlins were identified and eradicated, pre-show entertainment was provided by the animated Ziltoid and various stills of Devin in strange poses.

After some introductions and explanations of what the night would hold, it was right into it with some new material from Epicloud. 'True North, Lucky Animals' got the Devin treatment with the assembled crowd in good voice chanting 'Animal's, Animal's and we're Lucky'. With the absence of Anneke Van Giersbergen her place was filled by samples, which still didn't distract from the immense impact. After witnessing at least if not more that 20 Devin live gigs I still don't tire from his onstage banter and truly awe inspiring shows. 'Vampira' got everyone in the venue shaking their devil dance butts and 'Jullar' simply steamrollered through the venue full force, on a collision course to hell.

The weight and sheer heaviness of some of Devin's material beggars belief, it sits so well alongside his mellower acoustic numbers which carry their own weight through his unique delivery. Closing the set with 'Grace' and its majestic choral overtures, it brought to an end a truly inspiring set, Devin pausing to reassure us Anneke would be there on Saturday. An encore of 'Bad Devil' saw the place erupt building the anticipation for the Retinal Circus even more. Devin Townsend once again proved his meteoric rise to the top of his game.
