Concert Reviews Univers Zero Take Over the Saturday Headline Slot in 2004!

Univers Zero, a six piece chamber rock ensemble from Belgium and led by drummer/composer Daniel Denis, headlined the Saturday show at NEARfest, and rightly so! Celebrating their 30th year, Univers Zero mixed complexity with realism into a powerful and memorable performance.

Culling songs from their more recent catalog of music, the set consisted of classic material from albums such as Ceux Du Dehors, Crawling Wind, Rhythmix, and the latest release Implosion. Violin, keyboards, bass, clarinet, bassoon, drums & percussion were in full force during the bands 2 hour set, which provided dark yet beautiful soundscapes & chilling aural imagery.
From deep inner caverns spawned notes soaked with emotion while multi-media projections displayed receptive images of the Hindenburg crash, atomic testing, cities & pyramids, to name a few. The abstract use of this imagery allowed me to feel a deep inner passion and reflection as the music carried me through the sea of my soul, and it seemed like many in attendance where having the same experience. I hope a live DVD is on the horizon, because Univers Zero was the highlight of my weekend, and a live document on video is something that I'm sure many would cherish. The songs the band performed from their new album Implosion burned an everlasting hole through me. This was a headlining performance for the ages!
