I have to admit that until the link for this album was sent in my direction I'd never heard of Vex, but I'm now pleased to be of their acquaintance as Thanatopsis is a powerful, possibly even memorable debut CD from the Texans. There may well be only seven songs on the album but buyers will feel in no way short changed as in the main this is an exercise in excellence.
If I was to quibble, and Lord knows I love to, occasionally a couple of the songs seem to be a little disjointed as if the band had some riffs that they absolutely needed to shoehorn in somewhere at any expense. That said, there's some brilliant melodic death metal to be thoroughly enjoyed here, "Motionless" is a real winner with a really concise solo that perfectly fits the song before returning back to brutality.
The key track is the album's denouement "Era of Delusion" which despite being possibly one of those songs cobbled together from disparate riffs is highly rewarding and well worth repeated listens. It may well have taken about twelve years for Vex to get their debut album in the shops but it's good that it's now with us.
