Chances are the name White Wizzard will already be familiar given the large amount of acclaim that has been heaped upon them since this album was released back at the start of the year. But with the band about to hit the UK for some much anticipated live dates it seems a good time for SoT to catch up and finally get around to reviewing Over The Top. A rallying cry against the extreme variants of the contemporary Metal scene, White Wizzard all about hook filled anthems, soaring vocals, duelling guitars and (most importantly of all) a genuine sense of fun.
With the playing as skilfully executed as it is here, White Wizzard cannot be dismissed as a novelty act and the overall vibe is further enhanced by some crisp and clear production with every note ringing out true. Bassist and primary songwriter Jon Leon knows what it takes to pen a Metal anthem and the title track kick starts the CD as an immediate declaration of intent. "Live Free or Die", "Death Race" and "White Wizzard" itself are other highlights but the albums real standout is galloping epic "Iron Goddess of Vengeance". Maiden-esque in both tempo and pacing it comes with lyrics that weave a tale and some top-notch soloing. Some versions of the album have bonus covers in the form of Priest's "Heading out to the Highway" and the more obscure "Gates of Gehenna" from NWOBHM hopefuls Cloven Hoof.
Since this album was first issued White Wizzard have twice changed vocalists and new frontman Peter Ellis will be at the helm when the UK tour kicks off in Wolverhampton on November 5th. A brand new single "Shooting Star", a tribute to Ronnie James Dio, has just been made available via ITunes and also includes a cover of "We Rock".
A joyous romp back to the days when Maiden and Priest ruled the airwaves, White Wizzard are simply essential listening for these difficult times.
