Gallagher, Rory: Ghost Blues-The Story of Rory Gallagher and the Beat Club Sessions (DVD)

Eagle Vision's continued push to make the world remember the great talents of the late Irish guitar legend Rory Gallagher continues with this documentary/live set titled Ghost Blues: The Story of Rory Gallagher and The Beat Club Sessions. If you've never sampled the works of the hard rock/blues great, this DVD set might be a good way to start your introduction to Gallagher, one of the most influential players of the last 40 years who, unfortunately, never achieved the fame of many of his contemporaries and died way too young at the age of 47.

The documentary is very well done, compiling plenty of live footage & photos from throughout Rory's career, starting from his childhood, teenage years, his first big band Taste, and of course his lengthy solo career. Interviews with his brother Donal Gallagher, Bob Geldorf, U2's The Edge, Cameron Crowe, Shash, The Smith's Johnny Marr, Bill Wyman from The Rolling Stones, Vivian Campbell, and former band members Ted McKenna & Gerry McAvoy are just some of the folks spoken to for this film, and give plenty of insight into the man who remains to this day one of the most well respected guitar players of all time. There are also some interview segments with Rory, both video and audio, to add even more depth to this documentary. The abundance of live footage (much of which is already available on other live DVDs) is what ultimately will catch and grab you, as Gallagher was one of those performers who really stood out on the stage, much more so than on the studio albums. The closing section where his brother Donal talks about Rory's final weeks is quite emotional. This is a wonderful tribute to a fallen legend.

Gallagher appeared on the German TV show Beat Club numerous times, and the second DVD in this set brings together three appearances from the early 70's. Rory and the band run through selections from his first two solo albums, all sweaty & energetic blues rock rave ups featuring plenty of his sizzling slide guitar licks. Loads of highlights here, including hot versions of "Crest of a Wave", "Tore Down", "Laundromat", "Hands Up", "Hoodoo Man", and the always impressive "Messin' With the Kid".

For the novice, or the dedicated Rory Gallagher fan, this is a DVD you won't want to miss. Filled with high quality video & audio, Eagle Vision has once again put together another professional set that rock fans can enjoy for years to come.

We miss you Rory!
