Helevorn: Forthcoming Displeasure

After releasing their debut, Fragments, back in 2005, Helevorn appeared on November Songs-Katatonia Tribute, in 2006. Forthcoming Displeasure is the band second effort.

This Spanish act plays a doom metal inspired by their icons: Draconian, Swallow the Sun, November Doom and the likes, which they also shared the stage with. This music is mostly in the mid tempo with occasional slower paces too. The riffing and bass work together to create the appropriate crunchiness of the genre. Shy keyboards are making their steady ambiences. The guitars are also playing their melodious parts pretty well. As for the vocals, the growls are just right, but I have a bit of a problem with the clean ones. Not that they are bad or inappropriate, just somewhat dull and emotionless. They remind me of Depeche Mode, oddly enough. The overall feel is good, a bit generic and somewhat unexciting doom metal. On the other hand, it has dramatic times and the riffing department is nicely crushing. A couple tracks are worth mentioning, without being outstanding as such. "Descent" and "Hopeless Truth" are the ones that come to mind. There are no bad tracks on Forthcoming Displeasure, it just lacks the sparks.
