Virulence: If This Isn't A Dream...1985 - 89

Southern Lord Recordings have done a comprehensive job with this first time on CD release of If This Isn't A Dream ,the one and only album from Virulence, the band who would become Fu Manchu albeit with a different vocalist when Ken Pucci was replaced by Glenn Chivens. The album was originally released back in 1989 and this edition rounds up all of the early demos and live cuts to expand the original albums eight tracks to twenty, in addition to a booklet containing liner notes by the original band members and copies of band memorabilia from the era. Musically, of course, Virulence were all about a fusion of hardcore punk with doom metal and led directly to Fu Manchu's stoner rock sound. Pucci's urgent vocals are part scream, part spoken and are in sharp contrast to the bands at times laid back style that meanders on the likes of the seven minute "Kindergarten" and the albums original closing epic, the nine minute instrumental "The Curse".

This is a release that will be warmly received by Fu Manchu's fanbase who will finally be able to secure the missing piece of the bands history. Full marks to Southern Lord Recordings for ensuring such a comprehensive job.
