Vermin: Define:Divine

Not to be confused with the Swedish band of the same name, Holland's Vermin return with their second release for Deity Down Records. After numerous self released demos and promos, 2006 saw the band debut proper with A Nihilistic Swarm, which made a small but significant mark on the Death Metal scene.

Define:Divine follows in the same style as that debut with obvious influences such as Meshuggah and Cannibal Corpse being melded with a slight Math Metal touch and some more interesting little guitar runs than some Death Metal contains. That doesn't mean that Vermin have created an innovative new sub genre, in fact far from it. Even with those slightly unusual phrasings this is reasonably safe, standard fare, however what Vermin do have in their favour is that they do it very well.

There's no respite from the ferocious battering across the ten tracks that make up Define:Devine and in fairness that is obviously the intention that Vermin have set out with. Ron Vermunt and Wolf Josten make an impressive guitar pairing and their focused onslaught is the main feature on all of the songs. Vocal wise it will come as no surprise that Laurens Oerlemans growls and gargles his way angrily through the album and while he is adept at his craft, he does not always have the most interesting of vocals.

This is a solid, if a little safe album and while certain moments do suggest that Vermin will move onto bigger better things, it doesn't quite happen here.
