Warlord U.K. : Maximum Carnage (remaster)

Warlord U.K. were a short lived death / thrash metal outfit from Birmingham that released one full length album, Maximum Carnage, on Nuclear Blast back in 1996. The album has now been remastered courtesy of the folks over at Metal Mind who have issued it in their typical limited edition, gold disc digipak format, complete with seven bonus tracks.

While the overall performances on Maximum Carnage are pretty solid as far as the bands ability to churn out a plethora of straight ahead, ultra heavy riffage, there are a couple of noticeable elements that unfortunately hold this album back sonically. The album suffers from a distinctly thin sounding mix, something that is particularly evident with regards to the drums on a track like "Theater Of Destruction", where the hits on the snare drum sound awfully weak, as if they were done on an electronic kit. The guitars also sound like they could have used a bit more beefing up a bit as well to give the songs the punch they so rightfully deserved. Although there is no information available in the liner notes with regards to the bonus tracks, they appear to be demo recordings as there is noticeable drop off in sound quality.

In the end Maximum Carnage really doesn't have much going for it to make it stand out from being nothing more that your typical 90's sounding death / thrash metal release. Based on the overall 'average' feel of this album, I'm not entirely sure that even if the sound issues had been rectified, that it would have made a huge difference in the end. Either way the band died a rather quiet death in 1999 before getting a chance to record a follow up effort.

Note: The band reformed last year with a slightly different lineup than what is featured on this disc, so we may yet get to hear a new, overdue offering in the not too distant future.
