Unholy: New Life Behind Closed Eyes

Unholy, unlike label mates Kylesa (who probably won't be my BFF any time soon), seem to have a bit more vicious power behind their music which definitely re-calls some late Pantera grooves, but with their roots in the hardcore scene Unholy just sound even more hateful towards pretty much every organism that they set their eyes on, including their instruments and fans. I mean you don't make music like this if you like the people who listen to your music and you don't want them to get hurt. No, New Life Behind Closed Eyes shows distain and disgust from opener "Seeker Immortal" all the way to the closing title track.

Of course this doesn't mean its an interesting album. Now I've read a few reviews of this album and many of them seem to think that this is "deep" music; that it mixes together the superb bone crushing heaviness of metal with the bulldog ferocity of hardcore, all topped off with a savage political / anti-humanity message. Now it may do most of these things, but minus the awesomeness which resonates from all those adjectives.

There is a certain nicety to New Life Behind Closed Eyes. It is a simple, heavy album. Every now and again there is a solo thrown that seems to add that bit more flavour to the music, the drums are relentless, and the vocals put a hell of a lot of spite and resentment into the lyrics but then bands like Lamb of God and Chimaira both have these things, plus the ability to keep the sound fresh through out the whole album.

Unholy is one of those bands that I would watch at a festival and have fun for the duration of the show because they played some angry stuff that you can mosh to, but once the show was over I wouldn't buy their shirt or their CD. I would just remember that they were fun to listen to in that moment and that is what this album is really all about and listening to the album is fun the first few times but then you realize that there is nothing else in the music to find.
