Viatrophy: Viatrophy

Viatrophy's self titled release is what I suspect The Black Dahlia Murder would sound like if they were to drop the inebriated At The Gates gimmick and produce a decent album that could keep the listeners attention for more than the first few songs. Of course this is a very simple way of looking at Viatrophy. Although it holds a lot of the similar melodic deathcore ethics that The Black Dahlia Murder embrace, like a similar vocal and riffing style, there is also a slight (and I mean slight) progressive side to the melodic deathcore churned out here that is apparent on songs like "The Etheral Darkness" and "Aurora".

While "Scenes of Extended Peril" is steeped in TBDM energy there is a certain tone to it that makes it seem somewhat serious and this is a feeling that resonates through out many other songs like "Mistress of Misery", "Sufferance" and "The Final Light". Now don't get me wrong this is all just glorified melodic deathcore. The heavy tones, the endless (almost song length) breakdowns, both are present yet slightly evolved so that it can pass off as melodic death metal, which it almost does. If anything this album will keep the dying carcass of deathcore alive for a while longer and Viatrophy would do well to get away from that scene as quickly as possible as they definitely have some talent. That is, unless they enjoy playing deathcore. In that case they need professional guidance. Or my foot up their ass.
