Elvenking: Two Tragedy Poets...And A Caravan Of Weird Figures

Italian folk metal band Elvenking's latest Two Tragedy Poets...And A Caravan Of Weird Figures, isn't quite what I expected. I was thinking laid back acoustic folk tunes, but it's an upbeat mostly acoustic album. Elvenking's previous album The Scythe, for me, well it wasn't the release The Winters Wake was, which was the superior album. Not that The Scythe was a bad CD, the band tried some different things, but I thought these additions actually detracted from what drew me to the music of Elvenking, and separated them from the rest.

On Two Tragedy Poets...And A Caravan Of Weird Figures, Elvenking have dropped the heaviness of The Scythe and replaced it with lighter/vibrant music, delivering positive results. The instrumental "The Caravan of Weird Figures" is followed by one of the albums lively tracks "Another Awful Hobs Tale", and acoustic versions of songs from earlier album The Winters Wake include the namesake title track and "The Wanderer", both being welcome additions. Track seven is a song which does have electric guitar, that being "Heaven Is A Place On Earth"... what the hell? At first I thought, "why would they choose to cover this Belinda Carlisle number?", but funny enough on listening to it, Elvenking's version isn't that bad, but whether it fits here though is debatable.

Two Tragedy Poets...And A Caravan Of Weird Figures is a good album for fans of both folk music and Elvenking. Don't dismiss this one because their usual style has been ditched for acoustic numbers, it's still Elvenking's powerful/well performed music that's worthy of your consideration.
