Nihilitia: Nihilist Militia

Formed in 2006 Washington D.C.'s Nihilitia are a power trio comprised of guitarist Chris Thomas, drummer Brad Sheppard and Sara Hussain on bass and vocals. After impressing producer Joel Hamilton (Mike Patton, Unsane) they recorded this 7 track debut album at his studio in Brooklyn and the end result is an impressive hybrid of doom, stoner and noise rock that is highlighted by a rumbling rhythm section and some accomplished riffing.

Having already shared a stage with The Sword the Texas stompers are clearly an influence, especially on the charmingly titled 'Shithouse' where Hussain shrieks and wails over the top of some low-end and menacing bass lines. Elsewhere, the overwrought 'Lightyear' provides a hypnotic, shimmering riff from Thomas and powerful instrumental 'Fortnight' takes the traditional metal sound and mixes in a combination of sludge, stoner, doom and even some Seattle style grunge; a complex arrangement that is again highlighted by some quality guitar work. Overall, Nihilitia have an unorthodox approach that at times seems like the band are all pretty much doing their own thing before it all comes together into a cohesive coda. It is probably fair to say that some consider this genre strictly one-dimensional and to those I would say check out some samples on their MySpace link below and prepare to reconsider any pre-conceived notions.
