Gulch: Uphill Both Ways

The third time is definitely a charm for the boys from Kansas. Uphill Both Ways is a bruising barroom brawl of a disc. Lead by the Philip Anselmo-like vocals of Dean Book, this foursome delivers a powerful mix of southern rock, stoner rock, and classic heavy metal. Dean also acts as one half of a very solid twin-axe attack. With his partner-in-crime Chris McNutt, they spearhead the band's damn-the-torpedos approach. Brother Duane (drums) and bassist Chad Norman cover their backs as a fairly solid rhythm section.

Uphill Both Ways serves up 11 fairly straight-ahead rockers that straddle the fence between metal and old school hard rock. Nothing fancy here, as the band goes straight for the jugular with the opening "Watching Old Friends Die" and doesn't relent the fury until the last notes of Ted Nugent's "Just What The Doctor Ordered". The pace is fierce, the playing extremely competent, and the prodcution very slick; making this a "can't miss" disc for fans of bands like Corrosion Of Conformity, Down, or Clutch, to name a few that immediately come to mind when hearing Gulch. Turn it up!
