Vertigo Steps, hailing from Portugal, are a band featuring members of bands such as Misery INC., Green Carnation, and Arcane Wisdom, and their debut 10 track CD is very good record in the Atmospheric Metal realm. Very much in the Opeth, brooding and beautiful vein, with excellent melodic sensibilities, great production and crafty songwriting, Vertigo Step have a winner of a CD on their hands.
Complete with full out Prog Metal, fretless bass, Ambient Rock and gorgeous slow passages that are complete with piano and beautiful guitar throughout this self titled CD debut, Vertigo Steps have made quite a statement that should fine them a recording label in the not too distant future. Self produced, with wonderfully constructed songs and with great musical performances all throughout, it is undeniable the talent that these guys possess. From the heavy "Vultures in My Dying Bed" to the sublimely beautiful "Fire Eaters" to the epic "I of the Storm" and "The Gruesome Smile", Vertigo Steps prove that they can do it all and well.
Vocally diverse and rich, the 10 songs on Vertigo Steps debut disc are heavy on feel and atmosphere with all being delivered with much conviction and a ton of style. Dark, Aggressive and with yet quite beautifully sad melody lines, this is one of the most enjoyable CD's that I have had the pleasure of listening to so far in the early part of '09.
If you enjoy bands like the aforementioned Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Mind's Eye or Zero Hour, then you will love this band. With an excellent sounding CD, both song and sound, it is hard to believe that this band is not an actual signed recording act. Vertigo Steps are THAT good and they won't be unsigned for long.
Check them out, it's worth the time and effort.
