The 13th Floor is the latest offering from Gothic Metal band Sirenia, featuring founder Morten Veland, keeping busy with guitars, bass, keys and vocals, and joining him is Ailyn on vocals, drummer Jonathan A. Perez, and Michael S. Krumins guitars.
This album has a lot on offer, while it is heavy to an extent there certainly is variety, that's one of The 13th Floor's strongpoints, they have the softer to high range vocals of Ailyn. Her performance on The 13th Floor is highly memorable, also the Sirenian choir whom do a great job on tracks like "The Ming Malestorm", their combined and grand sound gives the album a great feel. Then there is the varied levels of vocals from Morten, like his contributions on "Sirens Of The Seven Seas" incorporating clean and darker death vocals. Combine this with solid/tastefull showings from the remainding line-up of which there are prominent inputs, whethter it's the guitars or keyboards, and some extra touches from their drummer Jonathan, not just relying on basic grooves. The 13th Floor also sounds imposing with a clear/robust sound. "The Path to Decay", "Lost in Life", "The Mind Maelstrom", "The Seventh Summer" and "Beyond Life's Scenery" are all fine tracks, actually as you would gather from my rating, I quite like them all.
After Forever's demise was a shock, and I'm looking forward to seeing what that bands members do next, but with releases like Sirenia's The 13th Floor the genre is going strong. This is a very pleasing Gothic metal release.
