Various Artists: Global Metal (DVD)

Those who think metal music's appeal is limited and lacking in popularity, Global Metal is their wake up call. Global Metal follows on from the previous metal documentary A Headbanger's Journey. The wide-ranging feedback received from viewers highlighted that the popularity of metal was indeed very global and bigger than expected. The follow up sees the filmmaking duo of Scot Mcfadyen and Sam Dunn take the viewer on a trip through South America, Asia and the Middle East. Showing the struggle both bands and fans face, it's hard to believe there is a place where you can't purchase Metal music or t-shirts, or the way they are treated when displaying their passion for the music. The Political and Religious influences making life so very hard, but these dedicated fans are not about to give in and the bands fight back within their lyrics. View footage of these bands, many that most of us would probably otherwise never see performing, and hear how they have combined Western metal influences within their own styles.

Starting in Brazil then following metal fan Sam Dunn's journey of discovery as he flies to Japan, India ,China, Indonesia, Israel and Dubai, then returning to India for that countries first major metal concert, the band being Iron Maiden, before a huge crowd of screaming fans. Marty Friedman, master guitar shredder (Megadeth, Cacophony, Solo release) talks about living in Japan and being part of that culture. There's footage of Metallica performing in Jakarta, Indonesia 1993 with fans going crazy, refused entry even with tickets, within all the chaos buildings are set on fire around the stadium, causing a crackdown on future concerts. Besides the interviews with bands from the featured countries there are also those with acts like Slayer, Iron Maiden and Metallica who share experiences with these places.

Extras include interviews and bonus footage including a tour of Germany's major metal event, Wacken Open Air. This fine documentary is a must for metal fans, Global Metal is insightful viewing into a side of the genre we don't usually hear about.
