Smooth jazz rock, with plenty of guitars and horns, is the musical theme of Family Life, the first solo CD from Tommi Varjola — guitarist for the Finnish prog/fusion band Mist Season. Backed by a snazzy quartet of players on sax, trumpet, flugelhorn, keys, bass, drums and percussion, Varjola unveils 10 pieces that have more in common with jazz released by the Telarc label, say, than the fusion issued by InsideOut Music or Free Electric Sound. Varjola proves himself a talented player — and a generous one, letting his bandmates solo more often than he does on some of these tracks. Family Life, much like family life, lacks some of the diversity more adventurous listeners seek, but it is nonetheless a pleasant enough diversion to whittle away the afternoon.
