Urn: Soul Destroyers

As to if to prove there's a strong case to be made for using Black Metal era Venom as a springboard, comes the latest release Soul Destroyers from Finnish outfit Urn. However, the considerable drawback with this approach is fairly obvious in that what was once considered original and groundbreaking now sounds dated and tired, which is exactly the case here. Not only does every one of these ten tracks sound like a re-cycled "To Hell and Back" or "Die Hard", with an abundant amount of screaming guitar solos and a steam rolling, furious drum assault, but the band doesn't help their cause by refusing to deviate one iota from this technique. In the end the listener is on the hook for what basically amounts to ten interchangeable songs. The lyrics are cheesy and the album cover is... well you be the judge. The production as a whole is pretty impressive and Urn do sound inspired in their overall attack, but Soul Destroyers doesn't come across as anything you haven't heard before…say twenty years ago.
