Century is the one time side project of vocalist Carson Slovak that has now developed into a full band with the addition of drummer Matthew Smith and guitarists Jason Baker & George Fava. Their latest concoction of extreme metal is titled Black Ocean, a quick 33 minute platter that gets to the point quickly and doesn't waste any time showing you the attitude behind these tunes. While much of the music here can be considered hardcore with metal guitar riffs, there's an underlying sense of melody and atmosphere crawling beneath the surface that keeps this rather brutal album moving right along. Many of the songs tend to follow a similar pattern, which is probably the biggest fault you can find with the album, but thanks to some textured guitar work from Baker and Fava, things remain interesting. Standout tracks are the violent "Equus", the crushing yet melodic "Monolith", and the mix of psychedelia, post rock, and doom on "Daylight Algorithm". Overall I think this outfit is still trying to find their identity, but there are plenty of solid cuts here that warrant a listen, and I think the best is yet to come from Century.
