Warbringer: War Without End

Great to see a label like Century Media giving California's Warbringer a chance. These guys are all pretty young, most probably not even born yet when bands like Megadeth, Metallica, and Exodus first started cranking out this type of music. Don't let that dismay you though, as Warbringer have obviously studied their Bay Area thrash very well, War Without End being a solid throwback to that era. Musically, this thing reeks of early Exodus, Testament, Heathen, Death Angel, and Metallica, with razor sharp riffs and solos from Adam Carroll & John Laux flying all over the place, pummeling drum blasts courtesy of Ryan Bates, rumbling bass from Andy Laux, and the Chuck Schuldiner-ish vocals of John Kevill. Hard to pick highlights from this ripper, as each tune is more than solid in its own right, but ones to look out for are "At the Crack of Doom", "Total War", "Instruments of Torture" (complete with plenty of mosh sections like it was 1987 all over again!), and the insane frenzy of "Born of the Ruins".

Recorded, mixed, and mastered by none other than the legendary thrash producer Bill Metoyer (Slayer, Sacred Reich, Dark Angel, Fates Warning, DRI, Corrosion of Conformity, Armored Saint, Morbid Angel, and many others), War Without End is a fantastic sounding thrash CD, and a great reminder of how lethal the mid-80's thrash scene was. With up and coming bands like Warbringer bringing the goods, and veterans like Exodus & Megadeth making triumphant returns,we might just see a resurgence of the genre yet.
