Gorefest: Rise To Ruin

After hearing the first 30 seconds of the opening riff-fest known as "Revolt" I said to myself…"If the band can hold that kind of intensity for the next 8 songs this could be a possible contender for disc of the year on many people's list." Guess what? They do just that! The band gets in your face and never leaves; showing you just how convincing a "hostile takeover" can be!

Gorefest are raging with a renewed intensity that literally cremates the competition. Rise To Ruin is a huge leap foreword from the last effort with it's crushing musical brutality that shares, at times, more than a passing similarity to some of the more prominent Polish acts. Thick, dominating riffs, evil atmospherics ("A Question of Terror") and devastating vocal hooks are the major weapons in the songs, "Speak When Spoken To" and "Revolt" while the band also can switch it up and groove/grind with the best of them as heard in "Murder Brigade". Interestingly, the beginning of "Rise to Ruin" recalls "Bodies" by Drowning Pool with the wah-wah intro, but after that it just keeps lurching forward with its steady groove, not asking for permission if it's okay to do so! Another thing… you don't have to worry about any clean vocal breakdowns on this because founding member Jan Chris de Koeijer (Vocals, Bass) keeps it completely core free. This guy really knows how to push into his lyrics to get you involved without giving you some pathetic, overused musical cue! Throw in some solos, an exceptional production by the one and only Tue Madsen and you have something that easily stands alongside the very best that this band -and many other bands- have done. Take the time to listen to Rise to Ruin because they really bring it with this one. Mandatory purchase!
