Valdes, David: Imhotep

Chances are most folks have not heard of guitarist David Valdes...quite frankly, neither have I, but that's all about to change with the release of Imhotep. If his 2002 release Paradise Lost fell under the radar, it's hard to imagine the same fate will happen with this smoldering collection of red hot, chops heavy-yet-melodic collection of guitar instrumentals. Remember how you felt back in the mid-late 80's when Vinnie More and Tony MacAlpine released their debut albums on Shrapnel? Well, you'll probably get those same warm and fuzzies after hearing Valdes and his ripping technique and memorable melodies here. Helped out by drummer Ferran Roch, Valdes handles all the guitars and keyboards, plus writes all the songs, with the exception of Bach's "Bouree" and "1099 Adagio". Hard to pick highlights here, as so many songs contain intoxicating melodies and jaw dropping technique, but some worth mentioning are the legato frenzy of "Lake of Silence", the neo-classical fusion of "Beyond Universe", the symphonic progressive metal of "In Darkness", and the sick, shredderific frenzy of "Heart of Pharaohs". Another noteworthy piece if you like blistering solos and frantic rhythms is "Speed Metal Top", a real throwback to the Friedman/Becker 'Cacophany' days.

In short, David Valdes is a monster player who can knock your socks off with his speed, finesse, tone, and flair for a melodic hook. Check out Imhotep and be prepared to be very impressed.
