It must be pretty tough these days for doom bands to separate themselves from the countless groups who seem to pop up on a regular basis. Sure, you have My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Swallow the Sun, Novermbers Doom, Daylight Dies, Anathema, Katatonia, Daylight Dies, and perhaps a handful of others, all of whom have churned out consistent product in recent memory that helps keep the genre going. Add Norway's Funeral to that short list as well. Even though it's been a few years since their last release, and despite the fact that two of their members have passed away in recent years, From These Wounds is a surprisingly strong collection of songs that sees Funeral's music just as epic, dark, depressing, and heavy as ever.
While not something you will want to break out at your next party, there's something rather sophisticated and compelling about these seven songs on From These Wounds. From the crushing riffage, ethereal keyboards, and somber vocals of "Architecture of Loss", to the dark & gothic melancholy of "Red Moon", this just drips with sadness and mourning from start to finish. At times this might be considered a drawback though, as too many of the songs follow a similar pattern with nary a change in pace of tempo. Parts of "Saturn" sees the band quicken up the pace with some faster, melodic riffs, as well as inject some progressive & classical inspired keyboard work, but overall this is gloomy, somber stuff that probably has limited appeal outside the doom genre. However, if a musical pallette of loss and dispair is what you crave, this will be a most enjoyable adventure to go on.
