Obscurus Advocam: Verbia Daemonicus

France's Obscurum Advocam are here with their debut full-length CD release Verbia Daemonicus, an interesting mix of black metal, death metal, and a little atmospheric doom . Featuring members of Glorior Belli, Temple of Baal, and Wolfe, these musicians have already benefited from time on the scene, so you can expect a well rounded, professional, and unique recording here that delivers far more than what you might expect.

Despite the presence of blast beats, cold atmosphere, and bleak arrangements, it's not all chilling black metal on Verbia Daemonicus. The title track unleashes waves of intoxicating guitar riffs and blazing drum blasts at the listener while tortured growls tantalize your senses from all angles. Tunes like "Starlight to Twilight" and "Bounded Artefact" take the aggression of Emperor and the bleak outlook of France's other underground legends Blut Aus Nord, and put them together for a fierce offering. On "To the Bone" the band musically comes pretty damn close to the raging black metal of bands like 1349 and Dark Funeral, but with more of a mid-range growl on the vocals as opposed to the normal higher pitched shriek. Regardless, the end result is the same. The band's doomy and progressive side comes out on the 8-minute "Endarkenment", which fuses together textured guitar riffs, melodic lead lines, intricate drum patterns, and plenty of atmosphere.

Overall, Verbia Daemonicus is a solid slice of extreme metal, showing that France also has what it takes to deliver the black metal goods. It ain't all happening in Norway baby!
