Various Artists: SAW III-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

The trend over the last decade is to adorn modern horror movies with a soundtrack full of raging metal, alternative, emo, and metalcore music, performed by many of the top and up-and-coming bands on the scene. The latest installment of the SAW franchise, SAW III is no exception, as the soundtrack is a virtual whos-who of the current US metal scene. While for many, hearing bone-crunching metal music in a scary movie might take away from the "scare tactic" (let's face it, could you imagine hearing "Ride the Lightning" in Halloween or The Exorcist?), it's the way it is nowadays. That being said, this is a pretty good collection of songs that you have probably already heard before, but most of the tracks are very current and relevant, and no doubt a good way to get these songs noticed by those who may not have heard the albums they originally came from. Highlights include the catchy yet extreme "This Calling" from All That Remains, Lamb of God's brutal riff-monster "Walk With Me in Hell" (from the latest classic Sacrament), Slayer's intense "Eyes of the Insane", the technical prog metal from both Meshuggah's "Shed" and Mastodon's "The Wolf is Loose", and other solid tracks from Disturbed, Helmet, Ministry, Avenged Sevenfold, and Bullet For My Valentine, among others. With 20 songs in total, you get a lot for your money here, and while there are a few clunkers mixed in (Hourcast, The Smashup, Ghost Machine, Blue October) that really don't hold a candle to some of the heavyweights that are included in this set, overall it's not a bad pick up if you want a sampling of some of the different styles that are popular on the scene today.

Various Artists: SAW III-Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

My Score:

Once you have stopped shaking in your boots from the terror-filled gore fest that is the movie Saw III; you can put on this CD and find your blood boiling again instead of running cold in your veins. Yes, this soundtrack is just the type of release to help do it and get your energy levels high and excited instead of finding them in fear of the dark and sudden noises from alley. I admit that soundtracks for movies such as this don't usually impress me but on top of this edition featuring some truly killer bands they do also offer a particular launch point. Does anyone remember the movie Daredevil? Well, that soundtrack helped out a little band called Evanescence, so there is just a chance that some of the newer groups in the eyes of the masses on this release can benefit from it.

Immediate favorites on the release are "This Calling" by All That Remains as they are one of the best new Melodic Metalcore outfits around. There is also new music from both Lamb Of God and Mastodon who prove on their new albums that brutality in Metal does not come at the sacrifice of style and delivery. As you listen to their contributions you can better understand why they are leaders in the Metal world of today. Notables Meshuggah, Slayer and Ministry round out the most classic artists on the album while Bullet For My Valentine, Eighteen Visions and The Smashup show that the future looks to be bright in the Metal world. For a soundtrack this was a pretty good one and makes for a pretty consistent listen. There are enough worthwhile songs on this for it to be worth looking into.
