After the demise of Sanctuary back in the early 90's, lead singer Warrel Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard put together the equally powerful Nevermore. Rounded out by guitar whiz kid Jeff Loomis and drummer Van Williams, the band released their self-titled debut in 1995 under the production helm of Neil Kernon. Newly remastered by Century Media, this classic debut sounds better than ever, complete with some written commentary by Dane on the making of the album and the events leading up to it. In addition you get full lyrics, photos, and five rare bonus tracks, making this a worthwhile re-purchase for the Nevermore fan.
There's some killer progressive/thrashy/doomy metal on this first album, like the chugging "What Tomorrow Knows", the melodic yet crushing "Sanity Assassin", or the thrash classic "Sea of Possibilities ", complete with some ripping guitar work from Loomis. Other highlights include the anthem "Garden of Gray", with a great vocal from Dane, the mysterious & moody "Hurting Words", and the heavy power metal attack of "Timothy Leary". There's some cool stuff included as bonus tracks here, like the solid metal song "System's Failing", and the ferocious "Dreaming Mind".
Nevermore since have made quite a name for themselves, with numerous tours and a solid string of killer albums to their credit. Thanks to Century Media, you can now rediscover where it all began.
