Leave it to Music Video Distributors to come up with a DVD series that pays homage to some fo the great traditional jazz music that came from both the East and West Coast's here in the USA. This first volume in the West Coast series contains nice pieces of vintage footage, most shot in black and white, of some groundbreaking jazz acts of the classic era. From the daring Art Pepper and his band going all sorts of avant-garde and expolaratory on "D. Section", to the melodic "If I Should Lose You" from Legendary trumpet player Chet Baker. to three excellent tracks from the underrated Phineas Newborn Jr. Trio (Newborn was a great piano player), there's plenty of great stuff here on this hour long DVD. A nice surprise are the two clips from the Shelly Manne Quintet, complete with some scorching trumpet from Conte Candell, and of course, the classic "Jingles" by one of the original jazz guitar heroes, Wes Montgomery. Watching Wes run up and down the fretboard is worth the price of admission here alone. Jazz fans, what are you waiting for? Get this and subsequent Jazz Shots in your DVD collections-pronto!
