Cherry Suede: Cherry Suede

Cherry Suede's debut self titled indie release is the culmination of seven years of hard work and persistence. The Ottawa based band's roots stretch back to 1999 and is fronted by the songwriting duo of Randy Scott (vocals/guitar) and Randy Young (guitar). The band's sound is a veritable melting pot of power pop and classic rock influences, think Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi for reference points. The songs push a real emphasis on songwriting as a craft and the years of writing together have really paid off for the "Randy's" as there is no filler to be found anywhere on this CD. Tracks such as "Not A Day Goes By" and "Learning How To Let You Go", with its Adams like guitar driven opening and Scott's Bon Jovi-esque vocal delivery, have instant radio credibility with their strong melodic guitar work and anthem like layered choruses. A couple of requisite ballads show up in the form of "Why" and "In Pieces", however both of these tracks are surprisingly low on the saccharine meter and are delivered with heartfelt conviction. In fact not to overdo the Bon Jovi comparisons but "Why" is definitely a track that good old John would probably love to get his hands on at this stage of his sagging career. Overall this is a very impressive debut which has a great summer time vibe with lots of memorable hooks and melodies and long after the disc has finished don't be surprised if you still have the songs in your head and you find yourself still humming along. As far as this style of music goes it doesn't get better than Cherry Suede and you can't ask for more than that.
