Various Artists: Fusion For Miles-A Guitar Tribute

Tone Center has once again put together a stellar group of musicians from the rock, jazz, and fusion genres to pay tribute to one of the great musicians of music, this time around celebrating the music of trumpet legend Miles Davis. The band this time around features drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist Alphonso Johnson, Larry Goldings on keyboards, Jeff Richman on guitars, and sax player Dave Liebman. Ten tracks culled from Miles' vast catalog where choosen here, and the host of superstar guitar players each add their unique style to these classic jazz pieces.

Highlights? Well, there's many. Jimmy Herring once again shows what an underrated talent he is on the scorching "Black Satin", while Richman adds his tasty fusion runs to the funky jazz of "Splatch". The listener will instantly recognize Eric Johnson's blazing solos on the funk of "Jean Pierre", one of Miles' latter day favorites. Who better to play on the legendary "So What" than former Davis bandmate Mike Stern, as he adds his impeccable jazz chops to this be-bop classic. "Nefertiti" gets an almost avant-garde treatment thanks to the loopy and angular guitar talents of Bill Frisell, while former Return to Forever member Billy Connors turns in a surprisingly Wes Montgomery/Pat Martino styled solo on "Eighty One". In fact, the master himself Martino shows up on "Serpent's Tooth", adding his signature clean & speedy runs through this rhythmically busy jazz classic. Allman Brothers Band/Govt. Mule mainstay Warren Haynes lends his muscular blues chops to "It's About That Time", Steve Kimmock rips through "Back Seat Betty", and Italian guitar maestro Bireli Lagrene battles it our with Goldings organ on the extended "Spanish Key".

In a time when some tribute albums seem a little forced and contrived, it's nice to hear a series where the artists seem to really be having fun playing songs from artists that are near and dear to them. Miles Davis is a legend to many, and his music will hopefully live forever. For an interesting take on some of his classics done up by a host of hot guitar players, give this one a try.
