The title may be a bit presumptuous, but no one ever accused the bunch of interplanetary misfits known as Valient Thorr of being humble. No, sir. In fact, the members of this band – who made up their names and seem to think they're from Venus – play cocky and confident rock/metal influenced by everyone from Thin Lizzy and KISS to Monster Magnet and the Hellacopters. Garage-ready riffs, snotty attitudes and surprising depth make Valient Thorr's second record, Legend of the World, a whirlwind listen that will give you a headache because either 1) you're jumping around too much or 2) you can't take the noise.
Valient Himself (I swear that's what he calls, uh, himself) is not the greatest vocalist in the world, but with rowdy guitar music like this, who cares what the vocals sound like, right? Well, considering that Legend of the World contains songs attacking the Bush Administration, capitalism and the hierarchy of the class system, it might have helped if Himself didn't sing-scream most of the lyrics in an often unintelligible dialect.
Obviously, Valient Thorr ain't for everyone. But if you're in the mood for some heady riff rock, pick up Legend of the World from these guys – who at least are legends in their own minds.
