Crowbar: Obedience Thru Suffering

On their 2000 release Obedience Thru Suffering, doomsters Crowbar once again created a virtual riff-fest of memorable guitar dirges and monstrous grooves. Taking the spirit of classic Black Sabbath, Trouble, and St. Vitus, and mixing in some Carnivore and Melvins brutality , Crowbar has built a successful career in the metal world, churning out one hot album after another. On this Spitfire Records reissue, the monstrous riffs and anguished vocals of Kirk Windstein are once again the focus. Songs like "Waiting in Silence", "I Despise" and "A Breed Apart" all conjure up an evil, doomy sense of the apocalypse, with slow, downtuned guitar dirges that would have sounded perfectly at home on Sabbath's Masters of Reality or Volume 4 albums. Thick and massive walls of distortion and feedback adorne the awesome title track, the perfect death march anthem, and the galloping riffs of "Vacuum" speed things up just a bit to allow for some doom-meets-hardcore mentality. If you are looking for the best riff on the album that also has the most groove, look no further than the uncanny hook of "Subversion", a veritable monster track of epic proportions, a song that will easily get you in the grinding, slow mosh mood.

If you are a long time fan of Crowbar, then you have no doubt already been enjoying the sounds of this album for a few years. For those new to the band, dig in and dig deeply to some of the best and most consistent doom metal on the planet.
